Preparing for the Great Ethiopian Run

On August 1, I started training with the Ethiopian National Running Team for the Great Ethiopian Run (GER) . It is a fantastic experience. I am honored that these great athlets are tolarating a novice such as me during their sometimes gruesome running sessions. Currently the focus is on endurance. Most of the time we can be seen training on the running track of the American School-Addis Ababa, in the large indoor gym at Bole Rd and at the vast eucalyptus forrest 15 Km north of Addis Ababa. Health Geographic Information System (GIS) Applications for Yemen: Why is it needed? Ahmed Attieg et al., 2004.

GIS is playing an increasingly important role in public health care and management around the world. The ability to spatially link health, population and environmental data into one system creates a powerful tool that gives public health specialists the ability to analyze health data in a clear, convenient and easy to comprehend form. USAID, the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MOPHP), and Governorate health office (GHO) officials can use the Health GIS to visualize and analyze information in new ways to strengthen health planning at the national and regional levels.

Specific examples of GIS analyses for health include:

• Targeting resources to meet health care services supply and demand
• Assessing status of health care facility distribution and needs (i.e., georeference location using GPS, services provided, staffing levels, utilization, equipment inventory, population dynamics, or other specified parameters)
• Registry mapping (i.e., birth, death, etc.)
• Vector control/disease tracking
• Evaluation of health service delivery equity and efficiency
• Demographic studies
• Awareness and promotion
• On-site software training for GIS and health professionals

The Yemen Health GIS will move beyond basic mapping capabilities toward sophisticated, evidence-based spatial analyses that can be used to improve health care, increase health facility utilization, and inform decision-making.
